HPE Discover 2024: Discovering What’s Next
We’ve hardly had time to unpack from Discover 2024, and we already miss the thrill of talking to customers in person about our biggest announcements! At this year’s HPE Discover, held the week of June 17 in Las Vegas, over 14,000 attendees had front-row seats to see and hear news from across HPE’s portfolio in the areas of AI, the edge, and hybrid cloud.
Advancements in AI and Hybrid Cloud Solutions
There could not have been a better theme than “Discover What’s Next.” Discussions on each of the three areas have evolved and the excitement about the future of HPE’s portfolio was on display throughout the week.
Big News for VMware Customers
After Broadcom acquired VMware last year, many customers began to see a significant and unsustainable spike in cost and licensing. With Broadcom customers having few alternatives and facing a ticking clock, Zerto announced a way out amidst the uncertainty. Last Tuesday, the VP of Data Protection at HPE Chris Schin announced plans for Zerto to support Kernel-Based Virtual Machines (KVM), a Linux-based solution. Zerto will provide orchestrated disaster recovery with unmatched granularity, with RPOs of seconds and RTOs of minutes with application-centric protection and journal-based recovery. These are highly desirable features, especially for those feeling the sting of difficulties associated with vendor lock-in. Zerto for KVM is expected to be available later this year, complementing HPE’s decision to enter the virtualization market.
VMware Alternatives
Recognizing the challenges customers and partners face with VMware’s new licensing changes post Broadcom acquisition, HPE has entered the hypervisor market with its own open-source KVM hypervisor. This new HPE KVM hypervisor virtualization capability provides customers and partners with a new choice. HPE Virtualization Capability for HPE Private Cloud was announced and previewed during HPE Discover and is scheduled for release as part of HPE Private Cloud Business Edition in the second half of 2024.
“With the addition of our new HPE Virtualization Capability for Private Cloud, we now have a complete set of runtime capabilities across VMs, containers, and bare metal, which further supports our ambition to provide fully integrated hybrid cloud solutions.” —Fidelma Russo, CTO, EVP and GM, Hybrid Cloud.
AI Deployment
For instance, speakers in the AI program were no longer just discussing AI 1.0, or topics like generative AI and large language models. Instead, they were implementing AI 2.0 with ways of deploying AI into their existing infrastructure to realize substantive business value. Together on stage, HPE President and CEO Antonio Neri and NVIDIA founder and CEO Jensen Huang announced NVIDIA AI Computing by HPE, a portfolio of co-developed AI solutions and joint go-to-market integration that enable enterprises to accelerate adoption of generative AI. Among the portfolio’s key offerings is HPE Private Cloud AI, a first-of-its-kind solution that provides the deepest integration to date of NVIDIA AI computing, networking, and software with HPE’s AI storage, compute, and the HPE GreenLake cloud.
“To unleash the immense potential of generative AI in the enterprise, HPE and NVIDIA co-developed a turnkey private cloud for AI that will enable enterprises to focus their resources on developing new AI use cases that can boost productivity and unlock new revenue streams.”—Antonio Neri, HPE President and CEO
