QUIZ: Should You Break Up With Your Disaster Recovery Plan?

I noticed something today – disaster recovery plans are no different than relationships.  Bear with me while I draw this analogy for you.

In order to get a good disaster recovery plan (you know, one that you can see yourself with for a long time), you need to put in the time.  Sure, I can go to an event and buy the first piece of technology from the first vendor that approaches me, but let’s be honest – I nor anyone else wants to do that.

So you enter an evaluation phase – maybe let a few promising vendors wine and dine you.  They look so nice on their website, and there’s always that one that you hope calls back.  The others can be a little clingy after the first meeting though…

There is always a honeymoon phase – that period of time where you don’t ever fight, nothing goes wrong, and it seems like you’ve made the perfect choice.  Unfortunately, this is usually about the time when reality sets in.  Maybe that once charming piece of software isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.  Or worse, maybe it *gasp* over-promised and under-delivered.  Your mother was right, those tech vendors will say anything just to get in your checkbooks.

A good disaster recovery plan is one that adapts with you, satisfies your business’ needs, and accepts you for who you are!  Don’t shuffle around your entire infrastructure just to accommodate the requirements of one piece of technology.  Get yourself a hardware agnostic DR technology that delivers the aggressive service levels you require.

Are you and your DR plan meant to be?  Or has the flame long sizzled out.  If you ever find yourself asking if your DR plan is “The One”, maybe the two of you should start seeing other people.
