What’s New in Data Protection from HPE and Zerto: Q3 2024 Edition

Est. Reading Time: 3 minutes

Welcome to this quarter’s edition of what’s new in data protection for 2024! This quarter I will fill you in on all the recent updates to Zerto and HPE GreenLake for Disaster Recovery. As with every quarter, we are committed to delivering updates and improvements to our data protection portfolio within HPE and Zerto. So, let’s get started and review what’s New in Zerto.

Updates to the Zerto Virtual Manager appliance (ZVMA)

Journal Storage Optimization

For more efficient storage use, we now offer compression for recovery journal storage. This optimizes storage and allows the same storage capacity to store more recovery points.

Resource Utilization Optimization

To make the best use of system resources, we optimized the ZVMA to run more efficiently. It now requires a minimum of 6 vCPUs and 16GB of RAM with 8GB RAM reserved.

REST API Improvements

To enhance management, we added new capabilities through the API set, including the ability to manage site settings through APIs for deploying Zerto as infrastructure as code.

We also added APIs to manage the settings for real-time encryption detection for cyber resilience.

Multiple Identity Provider (IDP) Support

The Keycloak deployment in the ZVMA now boosts cyber security integrations by supporting the use of multiple IDPs with Zerto.

Resynchronization Enhancement

Rebooting the ZVMA and virtual replication appliances (VRAs) can delay resynchronizing the connections for resuming replication. We refactored this resynchronization to allow replication to resume faster.

Zerto In-Cloud for AWS Updates

Reverse Replication

For more seamless full recovery options, reverse replication can now be configured to automatically replicate back to the selected region after failover to the recovery site. This update helps data recover more quickly to the original production site.

Updated Recovery Options

Use these updated options to configure VMs during recovery:

  • Roles and Key Pairs for VMs can be configured in Zerto In-Cloud at the virtual protection group (VPG) level or the individual VM level. The individual VM settings always supersede the VPG settings during recovery.
  • Custom tags for VMs can now be configured at the VPG level.

Multi-Account Deployment Enhancements

There are several improvements for managing multiple accounts:

  • CloudFormation StackSets can now be deployed for a ZicTrustRole in Zerto In-Cloud member accounts, with or without an external ID. CloudFormation StackSets manage across multiple accounts in AWS.
  • Zerto In-Cloud now enhances security by managing individual Customer Managed Keys (CMKs) for each managed AWS account.
  • The Zerto In-Cloud console now shows a ready/not ready status for each individually managed account to determine the availability of the accounts.

Analytics Integration Enhancement

Zerto In-Cloud now integrates with Zerto Analytics to provide a better organizational view that shows new managed account topologies for indicating deployment in AWS regions.

HPE GreenLake for Disaster Recovery Updates

Disaster Recovery (DR) to/from Azure: Global Management of DR to/from Azure

We are excited to introduce the robust management capabilities of Azure Disaster Recovery support for HPE GreenLake for Disaster Recovery. This powerful combination of Zerto technology and HPE GreenLake helps customers leverage Azure’s extensive cloud infrastructure for DR while providing global management of connected Azure DR sites within the DR cloud console.

Our customers will enjoy the flexibility and scalability of Azure and the improved DR management experience unique to HPE GreenLake for Disaster Recovery.

Reverse Protect: Rapid Failback

With Reverse Protect, users can continue replication post-failover and failback faster from within a single cloud console. The Reverse Protect release overcomes a significant usability issue that required users to leave the DR service and make manual changes to continue protection.

Significantly, DR users can now manage this setting for all protection groups within the Data Services Cloud Console. We improved the user experience of selecting a custom checkpoint by allowing the user to filter from pre-selected options or the calendar.
