Regarding VM Serial Number

  • Hello team,

We are going to migrate our VMs (using Zerto 7.0) from vSphere 6.7 (with ESXi 6.0) to vSphere 6.7 (with ESXi 6.5) to a new Datacenter with new ESXi hardware.

We get below details from VMs:
    C:\Users\xxxxxxx>wmic bios get serialnumber
    SerialNumber
    VMware-42 17 77 3e c9 67 bb e2-6f 09 af 9c 5c 91 8d 03

Now, I have few queries on the above serial number:

    1. Could you please confirm if the VMs’ serial numbers will remain same after migrating those VMs to new target DC with new hardware?
    2. Is there any configuration we need to do at Zerto level to maintain the same VM serial number details?
    3. Please let me know the way to keep that serial number same in target environment.

    Thanks in advance.

    Regards,

    Swapan Sett

    Hello Swapan,

    Contara from Zerto Support.

Could you please confirm if the VMs’ serial numbers will remain same after migrating those VMs to new target DC with new hardware?

    [Contara] Yes

Is there any configuration we need to do at Zerto level to maintain the same VM serial number details?

You need to use “For incoming replication, copy the BIOS UUID of the protected VM to the recovered VM” feature option in Zerto.

    Please see page 462.

    Notes:
    • Preserving of the BIOS UUID is not supported in Clone and Self-Replication recovery operations.
    • Preserving of the BIOS UUID is not supported in Public Cloud.
    • Cross replication is not supported.

    Thank you.
