Export of VM/VPG data?
-
Hi,
We’re embarking on an effort to point most of our VPG’s to a different vcenter/cluster/storage/network. With our Standard licensing it appears we have to rebuild all the VPG’s (close to 200 VPG’s). I’d like to get a clean export of VM to VPG data along with configuration info such as failover network. Worst case an export that looks like the VM’s tab in the UI.
When I do an export from the VPG tab in the UI I get a really ugly spreadsheet that is useless for sorting. I’ve attempted running Get-protectiongroups from powershell and it times out (we have 5 sites).
Thanks for any insight. I’m assuming there are tables in the SQL DB that could be use but we have no direct access at least using the embedded SQL engine.
I was able to cobble together a script from http://s3.amazonaws.com/zertodownload_docs/5.0U4/White%20Paper%20-%20Automating%20Zerto%20Virtual%20Replication%20with%20PowerShell%20and%20REST%20APIs.pdf
This output CSV’s with much better sortable data.
Thanks for the info, Ron.
I can see about updating our documentation to include this script.
Ron F,
Can you please post the script you used to gather the data? I’m working on a similar project and would rather not “re-invent the wheel”. 🙂
Thanks!
Here ya go

Julian MAugust 30, 2021 05:22:55 AMThanks Ron, it would have been a long-winded exercise trying to replace all the quote characters from the original PDF.
One problem with the code, and this has nothing to do with the changes you made to get it to work, is that for virtuals which are replicated to multiple destinations, the data for a few properties in the VMArray.CSV shows as “System.Object[]”. What I found is that there are multiple properties for the variable and when an object variable is exported to CSV, it is entered as “System.Object[]” in the file.
The reason this is happening is when we look at this part of the code:
########################################## # Starting for each VM ID action for collecting ZVM VM data ################################################ foreach ($_ in $VPGVMIdentifiers) { $VMIdentifier = $_ # Get VMs settings $GetVMSettingsURL = $baseURL+”vpgSettings/”+$VPGSettingsIdentifier+”/vms/”+$VMIdentifier $GetVMSettings = Invoke-RestMethod -Method Get -Uri $GetVMSettingsURL -TimeoutSec 100 -Headers $zertoSessionHeader_JSON -ContentType $TypeJSON # Getting the VM name and disk usage $VMNameArray = $vmListarray | where-object {$_.VmIdentifier -eq $VMIdentifier} | Select-Object * $VMName = $VMNameArray.VmName
The code loops through each VPG, notes the VMIdentifier then asks for the settings from Zerto using the Invoke-RestMethod. Since the virtual server is present in multiple replication destinations, instead of one text value being retrieved, an object is received with as many properties as the virtual machine has replication destinations.
My trick is to only retrieve the first of the multiple properties retrieved, and this is how i did it:
Affected properties in VMArray report:
VMName
VMProvisionedStorageInMB
VMUsedStorageInMBHere’s the code I modified:
########################################## # Starting for each VM ID action for collecting ZVM VM data ################################################ foreach ($_ in $VPGVMIdentifiers) { $VMIdentifier = $_ # Get VMs settings $GetVMSettingsURL = $baseURL+”vpgSettings/”+$VPGSettingsIdentifier+”/vms/”+$VMIdentifier $GetVMSettings = Invoke-RestMethod -Method Get -Uri $GetVMSettingsURL -TimeoutSec 100 -Headers $zertoSessionHeader_JSON -ContentType $TypeJSON # Getting the VM name and disk usage $VMNameArray = $vmListarray | where-object {$_.VmIdentifier -eq $VMIdentifier} | Select-Object * $VMName = $VMNameArray.VmName[0] $VMProvisionedStorageInMB = $VMNameArray.ProvisionedStorageInMB[0] $VMUsedStorageInMB = $VMNameArray.UsedStorageInMB[0]
I hope this helps.
Julian MAugust 30, 2021 05:49:29 AMThe code I posted above sadly now fails with virtuals which only have one property value, however it seems that this modification only fixes the issue:
########################################## # Starting for each VM ID action for collecting ZVM VM data ################################################ foreach ($_ in $VPGVMIdentifiers) { $VMIdentifier = $_ # Get VMs settings $GetVMSettingsURL = $baseURL+”vpgSettings/”+$VPGSettingsIdentifier+”/vms/”+$VMIdentifier $GetVMSettings = Invoke-RestMethod -Method Get -Uri $GetVMSettingsURL -TimeoutSec 100 -Headers $zertoSessionHeader_JSON -ContentType $TypeJSON # Getting the VM name and disk usage $VMNameArray = $vmListarray | where-object {$_.VmIdentifier -eq $VMIdentifier} | Select-Object -first 1 $VMName = $VMNameArray.VmName
I replaced “Select-Object *” with “Select-Object -first 1” and it seems to be working OK.
