A-to-Zerto Glossary of Terms
Overview
SaaS, or software as a service, is a relatively new way of consuming enterprise software solutions. Rather than purchasing a piece of software as a single download and loading it onto a specific computer, you connect to cloud-based apps, usually via a web browser, from any device you choose.

What Is SaaS ?
SaaS offers a complete software solution from a vendor, usually on a consumption basis. Common examples are email, calendaring, and office tools (such as Microsoft Office 365). Essentially, you rent the app for your organization, and your users connect to it over the internet.
The underlying pieces—from infrastructure to app data—are all housed at the service provider’s datacenters. The vendor is responsible for the uptime of the application but not for the data hosted in the application. The responsibility for the data lies with the users.
Why Choose SaaS?
SaaS gives your organization the flexibility to access sophisticated applications with minimal up-front cost for software and hardware. With SaaS, you never need to purchase, install, update, or maintain any hardware, middleware, or software, making even sophisticated enterprise apps such as ERP and CRM affordable for organizations of all sizes. Typically, you pay only for what you use: the SaaS service automatically scales up and down. Your people can access SaaS apps and data from any computer or mobile device with internet access.
Protection for SaaS
The protection for your SaaS data, however, falls on your organization, as most SaaS solutions use a shared responsibility model. Despite basic protection from your software vendor, your SaaS data is your responsibility, not the vendor’s. This means that any outages, accidental deletion, or ransomware attacks can lead to irretrievable data and productivity loss.
